Once the optimum size of accumulator tank has been worked out, it is important to connect the wood boiler to the accumulator correctly. The most common and effective way of achieving this is to use a charging pump (Laddomat is a popular choice), in conjunction with correctly sized and routed pipe work. The layout of the primary system pipe work should be in accordance with the boiler manufacturer's guidelines and the charging pump installation instructions. Use of a charging pump (particularly the Laddomat versions), provides three key advantages. The Laddomat has an internal thermostat and re-circulates hot water around the boiler during warm-up, idling and end of cycle operation. Thermostats are available with a range of opening temperatures that determine the temperature at which the Laddomat pump opens and begins charging the accumulator tank. This prevents cool water returning directly to the boiler from the base of the accumulator and avoids condensation (that can cause boiler corrosion) on surfaces of the boiler. The higher boiler temperature provided by the Laddomat also maintains that helps increase boiler efficiency and reduce tarring of the boiler and flue. A high boiler temperature also increases the life expectancy of the boiler by preventing corrosion caused by condensation. The charging pump provides a lower volume flow of hotter water in to the accumulator and therefore assists stratification of the water in the accumulator, effectively charging the accumulator from the top down with very hot water rather than slowly heating the whole of the tank uniformly. Laddomat charging pumps have a gravity bypass valve which means that in the event of a power cut or pump failure, the hot water from the boiler will continue to charge the accumulator slowly by gravity providing that the primary pipe work is correctly sized and routed.
