When the temperature invariably falls over the winter months in the UK an air source heat pump will be less efficient, because the ambient temperature of the air is cooler so the compressor needs to work harder to drive the temperature of the water up. Conversely with a ground source, the ground temperature is relatively consistent all year round - so the efficiency that the heat pump works at will be maintained even on the coldest of days.
